The Xperia S is the flagship phone in Sony’s new NXT line up of smartphones. It’s also the first phone they’ve produced since they split from fellow mobile manufacture Ericsson. Does it have what it takes to challenge for the top spot in the increasingly crowded world of Android smartphones? Can it even take on the might of Apple and its iPhone? Let’s find out.
The NXT line debuts a new design language from Sony. The Xperia S comes in a plastic unibody shell that’s has a curved ergonomically designed case. Not going for outright thinness like many of its rivals Sony has instead come up with a subtle attractive design that feels great in the hand and is easy to handle. A transparent strip along the bottom of the handset that houses the antennae and also lights up under certain circumstances is a nice touch that adds little flair to the design. Really though the body of the phone plays second fiddle to the screen. At 4.3 inches it’s almost the perfect size big enough to enjoy video and web browsing without making the phone too big to handle. It also sports a HD resolution of 1280 x 720 which adds up to startling 346 ppi pixel density. That’s even more than the Apple iPhones retina display! The result is a sublimely gorgeous display with razor sharp clarity and dazzlingly vibrant colours backed up by Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine. And if 4.3 inches really is too small then you can always hook your phone up to your HDTV through the phones HDMI port to experience your media on the big screen.
The Xperia S is powered by a dual core 1.5Ghz processor backed up by 1 GB or RAM. In a world where much of completion is starting to use quad core processors can the Xperia S keep up? The answer is yes. In most circumstances the Xperia S’ dual core is more than enough and you would struggle to see any difference between it and its quad core competition. Another area where the Xperia S seemingly lags behind is its operating system which is Android 2.3 rather than the latest 4.0. Sony have promised to update the Xperia S to 4.0 as soon as possible although history shows that manufacturers aren’t exactly expedient when it comes to updating their phones. Either way Android 2.3 is a capable operating system despite its age, and it has all of the main features you’ve come to expect. And if the pone doesn’t have it you can always download one of the more than 600,000 apps currently available in the Google Play Store.
With full Google Mobile Services you can get to your emails with Gmail, watch videos on Youtube and sync with your Google Calendar so you never miss an important date, all while out and about. Google Mobile Services also offers Google Voice Search, Google Talk with Video chat, Google Maps and Google Gallery 3D.
Sony has also added a lot of its own apps and features into the phones software. For instance Sony’s own Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services have millions of songs and movies to choose from and download to your phone. Sound quality is also superb as you would expect from a company with Sony’s heritage. Sony has added its own Clear Audio and xLOUD technology bolster the phones media player credentials. The Xperia S is also Playstation Certified meaning it can play a number of games from Sony’s extensive back catalogue.
No Sony phone wouldn’t be complete without an excellent camera and the Xperia S is a real winner in that regard. A massive 12 megapixel sensor can capture Photos in stunning detail. It also uses Sony’s own Exmor R technology to improve low light performance. This is the same sort of tech that Sony uses on it’s high end digital cameras. Lightning fast shutter response ensure that you never miss a thing and the Xeria S has a dedicated shutter button – an all too often overlooked feature in modern smartphones. You can also shoot FullHD video and then share it wirelessly to you TV or Tablet via DLNA.
