Mini phone, mini price tag. The Samsung Galaxy Mini is a cheap and cheerful smartphone with a lot going for it, but keeping smartphone smarts while keeping the price down is a tough job. It is something however, that Samsung seem to be very good at though.

Can the Samsung Galaxy Mini be a true budget smartphone? Samsung certainly seems to think so and were inclined to agree. Not everything is perfect but overall it covers the main bases pretty well, while being very attractively priced. Holding it feels light and comfortable, the curved bump at the bottom nestling in the hand. The plastic back feels pretty cheap though and the overall build quality is a little iffy. The Mini sports a large home button, flanked by buttons to call up the menu and go back to the previous screen. The power button is up on the right shoulder where it easily accessible. Inside, there are further cost-saving measures. The 600MHz processor sounds pretty slow by today’s standards but it can keep the phone ticking along fairly well considering the slightly outdate operating system.
The screen is probable the Galaxy Mini’s biggest shortcoming. At 3.15 inches it is very small by today’s standards, although that is to be expected given its budget price tag. What is less forgivable is the low resolution of just 320 x 240. It’s serviceable enough but everything looks pretty jagged and pixelated. Fine if you just use the phone for messaging and browsing, but if you want to enjoy video and pictures you may want to look elsewhere. The resolution is so low in fact that you may have trouble running some the latest apps. The camera is similarly disappointing. The 3 megapixel sensor size isn’t bad, but there is no autofocus or flash so image quality is at best mediocre.
You do get all of the standard connectivity options though like WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G so you can stay connected with the world at all times. Samsung have included an innovative new text input method called Swype. This allows a quicker and more fluid way of entering text rather than constantly prodding away at the touchscreen. Using this method it’s possible to achieve a very high word count, it’s almost as good as physical qwerty keyboard.
The Samsung Galaxy Mini comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Samsung Touchwiz interface over the top. The UI provides up to seven home pages which you can populate with shortcuts and widgets. Neat features include the option to call someone from their phone book entry or a message they've sent you by swiping to the right, or replying to the message by swiping left. Samsung have added in plenty of their own widgets including some nifty ‘live panes’ that constantly up date to show the latest weather or news. They can even show your friends most recent social network updates. There’s the full range of Google services so you can get to your emails with Gmail, watch videos on YouTube and sync with your Google Calendar so you never miss an important date, all while out and about. Google Mobile Services also offers Google Voice Search, Google Talk with Video chat and Google Maps. The latter can provide free turn by turn navigation through the use of the Galaxy Mini’s built in GPS receiver. With entertainment by the bucket loads direct from the Android Market you can fill your phone with all of your favourite Books, Movies, Apps and Games. The Market offers a choice of different genres, age specific and entertainment for various ages so there really is something for everyone and no one is left out.
