Do you need a phone that can take some abuse? That can survive the most extreme of circumstances? Then it may be worth you taking a look at the Samsung Galaxy Xcover. This little smartphone has been built to keep on going where other smartphones would fail. IP67 certification means that the phone is both dust and water resistant. It’s guaranteed to be able to survive immersion in water for up to 30 minutes with no ill effects. Useful whether you’re fording a river or have just dropped it in the sink. Its solid construction and rubberized casing should allow it shrug off knocks and scrapes. The back panel uses a special locking mechanism to stop it coming off if you drop the handset by accident.

The Samsung Galaxy Xcover isn’t just a tough exterior though, it also has some guts packed inside that can cope with most tasks you can throw at it. The screen is a 3.65 inch LCD unit with a modest 480 x 360 pixel resolution. It’s not the sharpest or best looking in the world but it is bright and legible even under direct sunlight, good if you’re taking the phone outdoors. The screen is protected by a sheet of ultra tough Corning Gorilla Glass, so it should be able to survive a few impacts without shattering or cracking. A 3.2 megapixel camera on the back is capable of taking a half decent photo should you come across any stunning views on your travels. You can also record video but only at a relatively low 640 by 480 resolution.

One useful feature is the built in torch that can provide a reasonable level of illumination in dark situations. There is also a Stereo FM radio and MP3 playback functionality for listening to music. The Galaxy Xcover comes with just 150 MB of internal storage space but this can be expanded by inserting an micro SD card ensuring that you have plenty of space for music or other media. A large 1500 Mha battery provides decent battery life.

The Galaxy Xcover comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Samsung Touchwiz interface over the top. The UI provides up to seven home pages which you can populate with shortcuts and widgets. Samsung have added in plenty of their own widgets including some nifty ‘live panes’ that constantly up date to show the latest weather or news. They can even show your friends most recent social network updates. There’s the full range of Google services including Gmail, Youtube and Google Maps. The latter can provide free turn by turn navigation through the use of the Xcover’s built in GPS receiver. Samsung have included there four content hubs giving you easy access to a world of book, music and video. The innovative new Swype text input method is once again present allowing a quicker more fluid way of entering text rather than constantly prodding away at the touchscreen. Using this method it’s possible to achieve a very high word count, it’s almost as good as physical qwerty keyboard. The Google Play store offers a huge selection of apps for you to download, most of which run fine on the Galaxy Ace Plus
