The Nokia C2-01 is a step up from Nokia’s most basic offerings. It retains the same classic bar style layout but adds a few modern features that can make a real difference. The design of the C2-01 is classic Nokia with high quality plastic with real metal detailing that creates an attractive, understated handset that feels solid and nicely weighty in the hand. As usual build quality is top notch as it is with all Nokia handsets. No compromises have been made to reach the C2-01’s low price tag. The screen is a 2 inch colour display with a resolution of 320 by 240. This doesn’t sound like much but is perfectly adequate for such a small screen and delivers reasonable sharp and clear images. The display’s viewing angles however, are less than impressive, with a very noticeable drop off in quality when you view the phone from anywhere but dead on.
Under the pretty exterior the C2-01 has some reasonable guts to help you get through your day. 3G data access is the headline feature that allows you to browse the web quickly when on the go. Bluetooth connectivity is on board allowing you to easily connect the C2-01 to wireless headsets and hands free kits. There’s a stereo FM radio for entertainment and the C2-01 can play back music stored on a micro SD card via the handy included slot. You can plug in headphones using the 3.5 mm jack on the top of the handset. The rear of the device holds a 3 megapixel camera that can produce reasonable still images but video performance is very lacklustre.
The C2-01 runs the S40 operating system. S40 is Nokia platform for lower end smartphone and feature phones. It’s reasonably capable and you can customise the home screen with shortcuts to your most used functions. There is even support for different apps that you can download from Nokia’s own appstore. It does have limitations however, there’s no flash support for the browser and the C2-01 cannot handle any kind of multitasking. Overall the C2-01 is a fine handset if all you want to do is stay in touch and do a bit of light web browsing from time to time.
